Whenever we think of an antique freestanding bathtubs we always think of the word traditional, because it is this type that really does hark back to an earlier era. It is maybe the longing for a vintage design that has brought so many different types of antique freestanding bathtub back onto the market, and this is especially true of the designs that come from the Victorian era.
One of the main things you need to think about is whether you want a bathtub that is open or whether you want a rolltop bathtub. A rolltop bathtub, as the name suggests, has a cover that rolls over the top of the bathtub in order to protect it and sometimes keep the water warm. This can make a real design statement in your bathroom, though there are not many types of rolltop bathtub available on the market as yet. The only way to get one is perhaps look for a genuine antique freestanding bathtub, which means looking at original antique bathtub supplies.
One of the other styles of antique freestanding bathtubs are the old-fashioned slipper tub, so getting its name because it's a very comfortable way to bathe, with a back that is sloped in order to make it as comfortable as possible. And of course there is the old-fashioned clawfoot bathtub, many of them done in porcelain, with a body of cast iron. Many people do think that they want a cast-iron antique bathtub, especially in a freestanding style, though before you go ahead and think about this you need to consider whether or not your bathroom floor is strong enough to support a very heavy iron bathtub, especially when it is filled with water. Luckily many of the modern freestanding bathtubs, although they are called antique, are not actually antique in the slightest, since they actually use many modern materials such as fiberglass. The good thing about this is that they are much lighter than the really old-fashioned ones, and are therefore suitable for almost any bathroom. The originals usually use porcelain as a covering which accounted for the heavy weight to a certain extent.
The original antique freestanding bathtubs usually had feet, and this is especially true of the clawfoot bathtub. However many modern designs of freestanding bathtub can now be placed in a different way, and can be set on a pedestal, something which looks really good when it is in the direct center of the bathroom. As well as this change in the method of support there are also many different shapes of freestanding bathtub now on the market. For instance there are now square freestanding bathtubs, also done in the antique style, and there are also antique round freestanding bathtubs, which really do make your bathroom look totally different.
The thing that you need to remember is that antique freestanding bathtubs were made to hold a lot of water, and even the more modern versions have not got rid of this idea completely. A freestanding bathtub will often hold much more water than many other types of tub, and so you need to make sure that you have a good water heater to supply all the hot water and also need to make sure that your floor can support the weight of all this. The deep water of course makes a freestanding bathtub in the antique style a very good soaking tub, and that is one of the main things that attracts people to them.
It should be obvious that there are lots to choose from, and one of the best ways to make sure that you know all the different styles is to do as much research as possible. Many online bathtub suppliers will show pictures of the various freestanding bathtub styles, and by taking a look at some of these pages you should be able to get a really good idea of what is available. Take time to do the research, and only once you've done it, and are absolutely certain of the type of bathtub you want, should you go ahead and put in the order.
